Supplemental Health Insurance

My girlfriend and I were overjoyed as we prepared for the arrival of our baby girl in 2024. We carefully listed the essentials for the big day: a stroller, baby bed, and more. Then, an important question from loved ones caught our attention: “Have you chosen supplemental health insurance for your baby?”
Why is this question so crucial?
In Switzerland, a few private health insurance providers allow you to secure supplemental health insurance for your baby before birth. After birth, however, they can refuse coverage or impose conditions if congenital issues are detected.
We reached out to several healthcare providers, and only Groupe Mutuel, SWICA, and CSS offered this option.
Supplemental health insurance can be quite costly in the long term, and it’s not something that can be easily adjusted to optimize costs, as a health questionnaire must be completed each time. Therefore, we aimed to select the most appropriate supplemental health insurance based on the following criteria:
1) long term cost of semi-private insurance
2) support in cases of maternity
3) reimbursement for orthodontic treatments
